Coahuila Desert Bighorn
& Mule Deer Hunts
Guided spot-and-stalk in Coahuila and the Sierra Madre for desert bighorn sheep, giant desert mule deer and world-class Coues deer — through Rob Dunham’s twenty-year partnership with his guide. A desert ram is a life’s hunt.
This page reads like a brief because that is what it is — a straight, complete account of a pinnacle desert hunt. No fabricated acreage, no fear talk. Just the country, the guide, the three trophies, the glass-walled lodge you come home to, and exactly what to expect.

Twenty years,
one trusted partner.
Rob Dunham does not run Mexico from a desk. He runs it through a trusted partner on this ground for twenty years. When you land, the team greets you, drives you in, feeds you at the lodge, and puts you on animals. They know every drainage, every thermal and every bedding ridge in this desert.
That is the whole reason this hunt works. You are not handed off to a stranger in a country you do not know. You hunt with a partnership two decades deep — you, or your group, and a guide whose entire life is reading this ground.
“You — or your group — and your guide. The same partner, twenty years running.”
Rob Dunham is a professional hunter and television host with decades on camera. The judgement he brings to your hunt is the same one he has spent a career putting in front of an audience.
High desert, jagged mountains, endless glass.
This is the desert in Coahuila — cool mornings with the sun rising over the Mexican mountains, and country that grows some of the finest desert game anywhere. It is hard, beautiful ground, and it asks a lot of everything that lives in it.

The Sierra Madre
Rugged desert ranges where the bighorn live high and the muleys hold in the breaks. Steep, broken ground that rewards patience and good boots — the country a desert ram calls home.
The Desert
The desert plain and simple — open ground, low brush, and long sightlines. The kind of country that grows good animals because it doesn't give them an easy time.
Remote, Reachable
Wild country that is still a straightforward travel day — fly into Torreón or Monterrey, both about a two-hour drive to the lodge. No need for a long haul or a complicated connection.
Three desert trophies.
One of them is a ram.
The headline is the desert bighorn — but this country gives up giant mule deer and monster Coues just as readily. Here is each one, and what it represents.

Desert Bighorn Sheep
Mature rams up to ~40" are not unusual on this ground.
A true pinnacle North American sheep hunt — and a required species for the North American sheep slam. Many hunters need these rams, and this is a special hunt in the Mexican desert. Desert rams live in the highest, harshest, most broken country in the range, and earning one is as much an achievement of patience and legs as of marksmanship. Few hunters ever stand over a full-curl ram like the ones this country gives up.
Represents: the once-in-a-lifetime ceiling of North American big game.

Desert Mule Deer
200"-class giants — among the best anywhere.
Mexican desert mule deer are known for their width, and these deer we chase have some of the best genetics. Heavy, tall, deep-forked desert muleys in their prime, with genuine 200"-class giants on the table for the hunter who puts in the days. A desert muley of this caliber is a trophy most hunters chase a lifetime for.
Represents: a continent-class mule deer most hunters never see.

Coues Deer
Consistently monster bucks, well above the average.
Small-bodied, sharp-eyed and famously hard to find — the Coues is the deer that humbles careful hunters and rewards good glass. This corner of Coahuila produces bucks that run far above what most Coues country gives up, year after year. Hunt it once and you understand why the species has a cult following.
Represents: the purest test of glassing and patience in the desert.

Why a desert ram matters.
Of all the wild sheep on the continent, the desert bighorn lives in the harshest country and surrenders itself the hardest. There are no shortcuts to a ram — only days behind the glass, hard miles over broken rock, and the patience to wait for the right one. That is exactly why it sits at the ceiling of North American big game.
When you finally kneel beside a mature desert ram, you are holding something most hunters only ever read about. It is not a number on a wall. It is a once-in-a-lifetime hunt, earned, and it stays with you for the rest of your life.
The top of North American big game — few hunters ever earn one.
Premium and spoken for early; this is not a hunt you book on a whim.
Hard country, long glass, and the patience to wait for the right ram.

Glass at dawn.
Stalk when it’s right.
The rhythm is honest and unhurried. You glass the rugged mountains for hours — finding the animal is most of the hunt. When the right one shows, you and your guide set up for a shot. Nobody rushes you onto a lesser animal; you hunt until it is right.
How the expedition unfolds.
Hunt lengths are set with you when you book, but the shape of the trip is consistent — arrive and settle in at the lodge, find the country, hunt it deliberately, and care for the trophy when it comes.
Arrival & Handoff
Fly into Torreón or Monterrey. You are greeted at the airport as soon as you step off the plane and transported to the lodge by van or heli. As soon as you show up there is a cold drink and snacks waiting for you, and a beautiful fire is already lit inside and outside the lodge. A relaxed first evening — a chef-cooked dinner at the long table and a walk-through of the plan.
Zero & First Glass
Confirm your rifle is dialled after travel, then straight into the rhythm — climb to a vantage and begin glassing. The first day is about learning the country, reading the light and starting to locate animals.
The Hunt
The core of the expedition. Long, deliberate days behind the glass picking the mountains apart, then careful stalks when the right animal shows. For sheep especially, you hunt until the ram is right — never rushed onto a lesser animal.
Recovery & Care
When you connect, the work shifts to the trophy — caping and field preparation handled in camp, photos in good light, and a celebration earned the hard way. Then the transfer back to the airport.
Coffee in the dark, then climb to a glassing vantage while the country is still cool.
Hours behind the glass and the spotting scope, picking the mountains apart ridge by ridge.
When an animal is found, the stalk — closing the distance over broken ground, reading the wind.
Back to the lodge for a chef-cooked dinner, a fire bowl and a glass of wine, the plan for tomorrow, and rest.
Wheels-up to the lodge, in a single day.
Crossing a border for a hunt should not feel like a logistics project. Here is the route, start to finish — and the team handles every transfer along the way.
Fly In
Land at Torreón or Monterrey. We help coordinate the connection so your travel day stays simple.
Drive Or Heli
Roughly a two-hour drive to the lodge — or a helicopter option for the deeper, more remote country.
Met At The Lodge
The team greets you at the lodge, gets you settled, and lays out the plan for the days ahead.
Into The Field
Confirm your zero, then it is spot-and-stalk — glassing the mountains on this ground.
The hunting is rugged.
The lodge is not.
You come home to private Adobe chalets made in a classic Mexican style and a beautiful glass lodge with an open kitchen and a stellar fireplace. This lodging experience is truly 5 star. The meals are excellent and a big part of the hunt as you sit down to dine, visit and talk about the hunt. The fireplace is key in the desert — it is cold at night and people gather around after dinner.

You hunt.
We handle the rest.
From the airport handoff to trophy care, the team runs the logistics — so your only job in the field is to hunt well. Here is the honest line between what is covered and what is on you.
Included in the brief
How hard is it, and who is it for?
We would rather you arrive ready than arrive surprised. Here is a straight read on the physical demand and the hunter this trip suits.
The bighorn asks the most
Sheep live in the steepest, most broken country here. Expect hard climbs, loose rock and long days on your legs. Arrive in honest walking shape — the hunt is as much endurance as marksmanship.
The deer are demanding but forgiving
Mule deer and Coues hunts cover real ground and long glassing days, but the terrain is generally kinder than the sheep country. A reasonably fit hunter does well.
The desert adds its own load
Heat, sun and big temperature swings tax you even on flat ground. Water, layers and sun protection are not optional. Pace and patience beat speed every time out here.
It is not a drive-up, guaranteed hunt — and we would not sell it as one. You earn these animals.
Best time & seasons.
Dunhams hunts in Mexico on a limited schedule in December and January. We take select groups and dates fill up quickly.
Dunhams hunts in Mexico on a limited schedule in December and January. Select groups, and dates fill up quickly.
Cold mornings, warm midday sun. The country dictates the window as much as the calendar does.
Desert bighorn dates are the most limited and the soonest spoken for. The sheep season is the one to plan around.
The single most useful thing you can do is call early. The sooner you reach out, the more of the season is open to you.
Gear & optics for the desert.
This is a glassing hunt first and a stalking hunt second. What you carry behind your eyes matters as much as what you carry on your shoulder.
Quality glass is the single most important thing you bring — you will live behind it.
A tripod-mounted spotting scope lets you pick distant ridges apart for sheep and Coues.
Practiced at distance, dialled for wind — shots can be long across open desert.
Steep, rocky ground and big temperature swings. Comfort and grip earn the trophy.
A full gear list goes out once your dates are set. The lodge covers food, accommodation and the field essentials — you bring the optics, the rifle and the legs.
Trophy care, export & taxidermy.
A trophy this hard-won deserves to make it home perfectly. The team handles the field end so nothing is lost in the heat — the finished mount is yours to direct.
Field care & caping
Your trophy is caped and field-prepared by people who do it constantly. Done right, immediately, so the heat never gets a chance to cost you the mount.
Export documentation
We guide you through the export documentation to bring your trophy home cleanly across the border — the part that trips up unguided hunters.
Your taxidermist
You arrange the finished mount with your own taxidermist, or one we can point you to. The field work is handled; the artwork on the wall is your call.
One real hunter. References for the rest.
We would rather give you one true voice and an open invitation to call the others than fill a page with quotes you cannot verify.

We do not pad this page with anonymous quotes. If you want to hear what this hunt is really like, we will connect you directly with hunters who have stood over these animals — so you can ask your own questions and get straight answers from people who have actually hunted this ground with us.
You are not booking a brochure.
You are booking the relationship.
Anyone can list a desert hunt online. What you cannot buy from a faceless operator is what makes this one work — Rob Dunham’s judgement on the ground, a guide he has trusted for twenty years, and a straight answer about what is actually open. Here is exactly why hunters book Mexico through Dunhams.
A professional hunter & TV host
You are buying who you hunt with, not a glossy listing. Rob Dunham is a professional hunter and television host with decades on camera — and he points you at the right hunt for what you actually want, not whatever is easiest to sell.
A partnership twenty years deep
The whole hunt rests on one partnership. Rob has run Mexico through the same team for two decades. You are handed to a trusted partner who knows every drainage, not to a stranger in a country you do not know.
30+ years behind it
Three decades of guided hunting stand behind every trip — the experience to read a season, judge an animal, and know when a hunt is right. That track record is the thing a new operator simply cannot fake.
The truth about what is open
Desert bighorn is premium and limited. We tell you honestly what availability looks like and never oversell a season. If the ram window is full, you will hear it straight — that honesty is the point.
Everything handled
Permits, licensing, ground transfers, field care and export documentation — the logistics that trip up unguided hunters are run for you end to end. Your only job in the field is to hunt well.

Before you commit.
It is you — or your group — and your guide. You hunt alongside the team, the same partnership Rob Dunham has trusted in Mexico for twenty years. The country is rugged and the days are long, and you are never out there alone, but this is not a one-guide-per-hunter promise. Groups of friends or family hunt this country together regularly.
